XTC release their 5th album — their first double album — on February 12, 1982. It’s considered by many to be their best work.
By now, Andy Partridge was tired of live touring and actually collapsed during the England tour in March. Battles between the label and the band ensued — the label wanting the band to stay out on tour and the band concerned for Andy’s health. In the end, 18 dates were cancelled and the rock n’ roll rumour mills took over. Some people speculated on Partridge’s “state of mind” and some actually thought him dead. In fact, some America bands actually did “tribute” shows in his honor.
