Look what turns 30 today … DiVinyls was released on January 29, 1990 in Australia and in the US and contained the band’s most infamous song, “I Touch Myself.”

Christina Amphlett and Mark McEntee wrote the song with the songwriting team of Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg (who have written songs such as “I’ll Stand by You,” “Like a Virgin,” “Eternal Flame,” “True Colors” and “So Emotional”). Billy Steinberg had “I Touch Myself” in his notebook; he had written the first verse and the chorus lyric. Amphlett liked it immediately. The next day, McEntee, Steinberg, Kelly, and Amphlett got together and wrote the rest.

The album was recorded at Jackson Browne‘s Groove Masters Studio in Santa Monica, with backing provided by bassist Randy Jackson, keyboardist Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers fame and drummer Charley Drayton, who later married Amphlett in 1999. Sadly, Christina passed away in 2013 from complications due to breast cancer.

By the way … the video for “I Touch Myself” was recorded in a nunnery.
Of course it was.
