The rock opera by which all others are compared debuts on Broadway 50 years ago … October 12, 1970.
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice starting working on the show about six months after completing their original, 30-minute version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
MCA Records insisted on a single before they would pay for an album and stage production so they released Murray Head’s “Superstar” in 1969 but it did little if nothing in terms of radio airplay or sales. Then, in September of 1970, Yvonne Elliman’s “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” is released and is a modest hit. It also riles the bible-thumpers.
I don’t remember much but I do remember my Big Sis causing a rumble in the house when she states she’s taking me to see the rock opera. Bless her heart.
