The Butcher Cover

June 14, 1966 ~ Capitol Records president Alan Livingston doesn’t follow his “gut” but does follow John Lennon (who loves the album cover photo) and OK’s shipment of The Beatles’ 9th album to stores. By the time the album is released on June 20, most of the albums have been recalled and replaced with the band standing around a damn tree. The backlash caused by the controversial cover shot confirmed Livingston’s concerns. A few of the originals were left out there — a copy sold for over $125,000 in 2016.
